Critical reflection is an essential part of osteopathic practice.

When arriving on a yard to treat a horse or in our clinic to treat a canine patient, it is essential to remember that not everything will always unfold as anticipated. Sometimes things are unpredictable, as is the nature of life. This unpredictability reminds us of the necessity to pause, reflect, review, and potentially redirect as an inherent practice within our procession. This reflection is what I aim to delve into in this post, emphasising its relevance in our field.

In the realm of animal osteopathy, progress is paramount. Daily, we endeavour to propel our patients toward optimal health, working with them through osteopathic evaluation, treatment and management/rehabilitation. This progression is crucial, echoing the incremental yet significant enhancements we aim for in every treatment session, each approach being tailored for the individual. Our objectives may vary, for example from improving mobility, reducing pain, or improving overall well-being. However, our dedication to progress while avoiding adverse outcomes shapes our practice. It informs our decisions, aiding us in bettering the health of the animals we attend to.

Yet, it’s vital to recognise that pausing to observe and contemplate our forthcoming actions is as critical as our eagerness to progress. Animal osteopaths must be able not just to take action but also undertake the process of introspection. Assessing how the patient responds to treatment provides insights into their unique needs and advancements. This introspective practice enables us to customise our approach, ensuring our interventions are impactful and considerate.

Pausing for reflection isn’t indicative of inactivity but a deliberate intermission, offering clarity to select the most advantageous future course. It allows us to consider every facet of our patient’s health and well-being, merging our observations, expertise, and current research to refine our strategies and methods. As an animal osteopath, sometimes the most prudent action is to re-evaluate the animal, taking stock of all pertinent information to reassess their condition as it presents at that moment, on the day. However, this can pose challenges for owners who might equate direct treatment time with value for money. Thus, educating them about the significance of assessment and analysis is crucial. Equally important is holding ourselves accountable, regularly reassessing within a treatment plan to ensure we optimally address our patient’s needs.

Instead of blindly pursuing a course of treatment, hoping to reach an end goal, pausing to reassess and adjust our direction can lead to more effective outcomes, often enabling us to more swiftly achieve the desired results.

Striking a balance between action and reflection is essential in our field. Each forward step generates momentum, yet when paired with careful consideration, it accelerates our progress toward our primary aim: the well-being and happiness of the animals in our care. This balance is not just a methodological preference but a core principle guiding our practice, ensuring that our dedication to animal health is both thoughtful and informed.
